i went to a huge farmers market today. it was great. i went with a friend i met here. she's just finishing her 1st year here. we started off by going to the korean bakery stand where we bought custard filled pastries. it was about 8:30am, so we went to go get breakfast at the korean food stand. i got chap che de pollo. we shared a drink called jamaica. it's made by boiling rose hip in water, cooling it, and then adding sugar. after breakfast, she showed me the stands where she gets her eggs, cheeses, meats, fruits & veggies, etc.
afterwards, we went to centro historico and got to take in a lot of historic sites. some of my favorites are el teatro degollado, la catedral de guadalajara, and palacio de gobierno. we only had time for a quick run through all the historic sites. i hope i can go back later. we continued walking through these buildings until we got to mercado san juan de dios. it's three stories of craziness. i got a large cup of fresh squeezed mango and strawberry juice. this market has everything: jerseys, puma gear, car sound systems, pirated dvds, etc.
once we got out of mercado san juan de dios, we bought two liters of fresh ice cream. she took me to meet some of her friends (outside of school) at an indoor picnic. it was great meeting people. i met two american couples who have lived here for 30-40 years. there was also sergio, the tattoo artist...his friend, garrett who is in puerto vallarta making a tourism video...angela, who is making a documentary on teens here...
it was nice to talk to her about christianity on our bus ride. she definitely believes in god. we got to talk about personal decisions and how you can't be humanly convinced to believe something. today has probably been the highlight of my time here so far.
